A Classic Blue Sky Flying Day in Late Autumn

Amongst lots of wet days, overcast days, and high wind days in the last couple of months, we did have a beautiful blue sky day last weekend, when club members took the opportunity to work towards going solo, or kept their currency up to date, or fixed any gaps in their recency status. We also had a visitor flying with us from another club, which is always welcome. What’s the difference between currency and recency, you ask?

Welcome to New Club Member Yasir

One of our new club members, Yasir, was at the club this weekend, working towards his solo rating in our Twin Astir.  Today was pretty windy, so not suitable for very early solo pilots, but a good day for experienced solo pilots or those flying with an instructor to experience and practice tack-offs, circuits and landings in strong crosswinds.  Welcome, Yasir, we look forward to seeing at the club on future weekends.  Nice moves!

Welcome to New Junior Member Oliver

Welcome to Oliver who has joined the Vale of White Horse Gliding Centre as a junior member recently. He was flying at the weekend, along with some other recent joiners, and also learning ground handling skills,  and operating the retrieve vehicles. Junior members can go solo from 14 years old, provided they have demonstrated the skills and judgement to do so.  We actively manage their training

Congratulations to Debbie on her Motor Glider Flight

It was a busy day today at the club, with several introductory gliding lessons for visitors, and a motor glider flight for Debbie Bearman, with our Chief Flying Instructor, Al.  Thanks for being so enthusiastic about the flight Debbie, we’re delighted you enjoyed it so much, and we really enjoyed having you to visit us too.

Welcome to New Club Member Tracy Thompson

Welcome to our latest joiner at the club.  Tracy had done some gliding training previously at another local club recently, but had never aerotowed before, and found that a much easier method to learn by.  She joined at the same time as one of her colleagues, Gary, and it was great to see them at the club this Saturday picking up their training again, with one of our instructors, Pete.  Thanks Tracy, for managing the log-keeping today at the launch point, too!

Welcome to New Club Member Gary Thurlow

Gary joined the gliding club recently, after a few flights at another local club, which used winch launching, rather than the aerotow method used at VoWHGC.  So launching was a difference experience, but one he enjoyed.  It was good for some of us to meet Gary for the first time today, while he helped at the launch point, and had some training flights with one of our regular instructors, Pete.

Weekend of Achievements at Vale of White Horse Gliding Centre

It’s been a weekend of achievements coming thick and fast at the gliding centre recently.  A typical Saturday or Sunday normally sees a mix of early pilots learning the skills to go solo with our BGA instructors, a few trial lessons flights with visitors to the club, and in good weather, a range of qualified pilots doing cross-country flights, or aerobatics, or maybe converting from one glider type to another. This Sunday especially promised to be a perfect cross-country day, although it turned quite blue
