Congratulations to club member and Treasurer Adrian May, who completed his Silver C distance flight from Sandhill Farm to Lasham today, complete with photographic evidence to provide it, as seen above.

The Silver C badge requires pilots to complete a flight of at least 5 hrs duration, a soaring height gain of at least 1000m, and a flight away from their home airfield of at least 50 km, (which therefore takes them beyond the point where they can return to their home airfield if things get difficult). This distance flight was the last element Adrian needed to achieve his Silver C.

For most of us these are quite challenging requirements, particularly the distance and duration parts, but once achieved, set pilots up to tackle the more demanding cross-country flights we typically aim to achieve, of 100km, 300km, 500km or even more, which lead to gold and diamond badges. Silver C is also the minimum requirement to take part in gliding competitions
