It’s been a weekend of achievements coming thick and fast at the gliding centre recently. A typical Saturday or Sunday normally sees a mix of early pilots learning the skills to go solo with our BGA instructors, a few trial lessons flights with visitors to the club, and in good weather, a range of qualified pilots doing cross-country flights, or aerobatics, or maybe converting from one glider type to another.
This Sunday especially promised to be a perfect cross-country day, although it turned quite blue in the afternoon, making it more challenging. Even so, by the end of Sunday, we had a collection of achievements to celebrate.
Two junior members went solo, Charlie and Dan
One junior member, James, completed his silver distance flight from Sandhill, landing at Lasham
One (not-so-junior) member, Mark, completed his silver duration and height to complete his Silver C badge, and also scored a 100km Diploma with an out and return to Lasham
And along the way, another member, Ian, converted to flying the club K6.
As Chairman Les said on the day, congratulations to all the achievers, and well done to all the helpers, instructors and tug pilots too. Gliding clubs like VoWHGC are run entirely by volunteers. On Sunday, Pete spent the whole day flying trial lessons with our visitors, while Les spent the whole day flying the tug to get us all airborne, and Al instructed the juniors. Everyone else helped for parts of the day too, whether getting the gliders out and ready to fly, or launching and retrieving gliders so others could fly, or packing away at the end of flying.
What a great day!
If you’d like to join the club and experience the fun, excitement and achievement that’s possible through gliding, get in touch through our contact or membership forms on the website, or just book a trial flight – we’d love you to join us.
